Maat is truth, justice and order. She brought order from chaos at the moment of creation. The pharaoh was considered the lord of Maat and therefore the protector of his people. As a goddess she was often depicted with the feather of truth her heard or with wings. The feather of Maat was used to sway the heart to judge if the soul would go to heaven or hell. Iterations of carving patterns were created to create an ethereal form to represent the wings of Maat. The hanging console seems to caress the wall to which it is fixed. The carvings on this piece take up 700 hours of work.
